FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE SOCIETY

Call for Abstracts

31st International Conference of the Friedrich Nietzsche Society, Panteion University, Athens, Greece

08-11 October 2026

Theme: "
Nietzsche and Greek Thought"

Call for abstracts
The Friedrich Nietzsche Society (FNS) invites the submission of abstracts to be considered for presentation at our 31st International Conference, to be held in Athens (Greece) in 2026.

This conference will explore the relationship between Nietzsche and Greek thought in its multiple dimensions: ancient Greek philosophy, rhetoric, tragedy, and the emergence of Western philosophy in Greece. Nietzsche’s philosophical identity is deeply marked by his engagement with Greek culture―from his reflections on the Apollonian and Dionysian drives in The Birth of Tragedy to his later critiques of Socrates, Platonism, and the genealogy of Western rationality.

We welcome papers from established, early career, and independent scholars that illuminate how Greek thought informs and enriches Nietzsche’s work, and how Nietzsche, in turn, reinterprets and transforms the legacy of Greek philosophy, tragedy, and rhetoric. Abstracts for 30-minute papers need not address all aspects of the conference theme. Authors are encouraged to explore both continuities and ruptures between Nietzsche and Greek thought, as well as Nietzsche’s relevance for contemporary debates in philosophy, classics, and related fields.

Topics of relevance to the FNS 2026 Conference theme may include (but are not limited to):
  1. Nietzsche and ancient Greek philosophy, Greek tragedy, and rhetoric
  2. The Apollonian and Dionysian drives and their later transformations in Nietzsche’s work
  3. Greek tragedy as the paradigm of art in Nietzsche
  4. Nietzsche and the Presocratics
  5. Nietzsche’s critique of Socrates; Nietzsche’s critique of Plato
  6. Nietzsche’s early lecture notes on rhetoric and their significance for his later writings
  7. Rhetoric’s influence on Nietzsche’s style, method, and conception of philosophy
  8. Nietzsche’s readings of Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Aristotle, and the sophists
  9. Greek notions of agon, paideia, and polis in Nietzsche’s thought
  10. Nietzsche’s conception of philology and the revaluation of classical antiquity
