Welcome to the Friedrich Nietzsche Society

The FNS was founded in 1990. The Society's aim is to promote the study of the life, work and influence of Friedrich Nietzsche. Our activities are organized around our annual and biennial conference.

FNS is a proud member of FISP, the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and the highest non-governmental world organization for philosophy. We are also affiliated with HyperNietzsche, an international research group devoted to the interpretation and publication of Nietzsche's work.

COVID-19 and the 2020 FNS Conference

IMPORTANT: The 26th annual conference of the FNS (10-12 September 2020, Lisbon) HAS BEEN POSTPONED. This is regretful but unavoidable, given current global events. FNS will reschedule this conference, and interested parties will have an extended deadline to submit abstracts. Abstracts already submitted will still be considered for inclusion, in the usual manner.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The Friedrich Nietzsche Society (FNS) invites the submission of abstracts to be considered for presentation at the 26th annual FNS meeting. The conference will take place from the 10th-12th of September in Lisbon, at the Universidade de Lisboa and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

For more information, see: https://www.fns.org.uk/conference-2020-cfa.html.

FNS is now on Facebook

The Friedrich Nietzsche Society now has a Facebook page, providing another avenue to communicate the activities of FNS and to discuss the life and work of Nietzsche.

Visit https://www.facebook.com/FNietzscheSociety/ and like and share our page. All the latest FNS news will be published on the Facebook page, as well as on the main FNS website. You'll also be able to get in touch with us via Facebook Messenger.

New FNS website launched, January 2019

We're very happy to welcome you to the new FNS website.

FNS had been supported in providing a website for a number of years by Quinnipiac University, thanks to sponsorship obtained by Dr. Rebecca Bamford. We're grateful for this support, which allowed FNS to focus on supporting Nietzsche scholarship via conference development.

With a new website now in place, Rebecca is stepping down from the FNS executive committee, having served as a member since 2009.

FNS is delighted to introduce Dr. Jamie Parr as the new Webmaster, and Mole & social media editor.

Annual R. J. Hollingdale Memorial Prize, 2017

FNS is very pleased to announce that the winner of the 2017 R.J. Hollingdale Prize, for a paper originally delivered at the FNS annual conference, is Katie Brennan, PhD candidate in philosophy at Temple University, for her paper "The Wisdom of Silenus."

The paper was judged by 3 members of the executive committee who commented: "Among the submissions considered by the Hollingdale Prize committee, this well-argued essay distinguished itself by its careful exegetical work and erudition, and by its skillful and selective engagement with a crowded scholarly literature on this important topic. In its sharp and sustained focus on a single, early text of Nietzsche's, this article makes a significant contribution to our understanding of that work, and to Nietzsche's longstanding preoccupation with the problem of nihilism."

FNS would like to thank all those who submitted an entry and who participated in an excellent conference, and look forward to welcoming future conference papers and prize submissions.

The Annual R.J. Hollingdale Essay Prize is awarded in fond memory of Reg and the marvelous work he did translating Nietzsche’s works into English. The prize consists of a modest 300 GBP and (– a special request from Reg’s daughter Frances –) a bottle of Bell’s whiskey.
